We are writing to express our gratitude for the District of Sechelt Council’s standing with us and for support
of UBCIC Resolution 2024-33 “Rejection of Residential School Denialism.”
Residential Schools caused immeasurable and ongoing harm to Indigenous Peoples and individuals across
what is now known as Canada. The truth of what happened in Residential Schools in this country, including at
St. Augustine’s in Sechelt, is well documented. Our courageous survivors have told us the truth and the truth
must be heard, understood, and accepted before reconciliation can occur in this country.
Residential School denialism and misinformation has no place in our society. It retraumatizes survivors and
their families causing further challenges on the path to healing and reconciliation. We must be honest about
our past and see it clearly before we can move forward together.
We thank Sechelt Council for standing with us and our survivors.
Sincerely,
shfshalh Nation Council
