Notice to Community Members – Safety Concerns
NOTICE TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS
shíshálh Nation would like to make our community aware of a serious safety concern at the beachfront area.
Yesterday evening, one of our youth stepped on a discarded needle while walking down to the water to swim. Thankfully, the situation was addressed immediately, but this incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by drug-related activity in our public spaces.
The safety and wellbeing of our children, families, and community members is our highest priority. shíshálh Nation has zero tolerance for drug-related activity on our lands.
With the swimming rafts recently placed in the water for summer use, we know the beachfront and pier areas will continue to attract many of our youth and families. We ask all community members to remain vigilant and report any unsafe activity or hazardous materials immediately.
To address this issue proactively, we are organizing a sweep of the beachfront area to search for and safely dispose of any remaining needles or related debris.
We have also spoken with the RCMP and requested increased patrols and monitoring around the pier and surrounding beachfront areas.
If you encounter needles or unsafe materials, please do not handle them directly. Report them immediately to our on-call public works number at 604-399-9630 or the RCMP non-emergency line at 604-885-2266.
Thank you to everyone for helping keep our community safe.
