shíshálh Nation Welcomes New Leadership at Inauguration Ceremony

SECHELT, B.C. — June 20, 2026 — Community members gathered at the shíshálh Nation Longhouse on Saturday, June 20, to witness the inauguration of the Nation’s newly elected leadership during a ceremony rooted in culture, tradition, and community.

The event marked the official swearing-in of híwus kwa’saʔlahuet (Chief) Warren Paull and híhewhíwus (Councillors) xwaʔ (Philip Paul), lh’ayaxwemat (Selina August), chusep (Jamel Paul), and tsesote (Benny Pierre Jr.), who will guide the Nation in the years ahead.

The ceremony brought together community members, family, and friends to celebrate this important transition in leadership. Guests shared a catered meal and reflected on the responsibilities and opportunities that accompany this new chapter for the Nation.

A special moment during the event was the honouring of outgoing council members lhe hiwus yalxwemult (Lenora Joe), híhewus o’shale (Rochelle Jones), híhewus ch’elkwilwet (Raquel Joe), and híhewus tituya (Keith Julius). Their service, dedication, and contributions to the Nation were recognized with gratitude and respect.

The day also featured a naming ceremony for Councillor chusep (Jamel Paul), recognizing his ancestral name and the cultural responsibilities it carries within the community. The ceremony underscored the enduring importance of language, culture, and traditional teachings in shíshálh governance.

The inauguration reflected the strength and continuity of shíshálh traditions while celebrating the Nation’s future under its newly elected leadership. As community members raised their hands in support and recognition, the gathering served as a powerful reminder of the values, relationships, and shared vision that continue to guide the shíshálh Nation.
