mem7iman Child Development Centre

For the last 20 years the centre has provided quality learning experiences to children from six months of age to five years of age. In recent years, mem7iman has adopted the Reggio Emilia approach to education which incorporates an inquiry-driven, play-based foundation and uses student ideas to direct emergent curriculum.

mem7iman is open to shíshálh Nation members and members of the Sunshine Coast.

Our Vision

Cultural wisdom is significant because it forms the foundation of our learning and our communities. At mem7iman, we work to integrate experiences from our past to cement our paths to the future. Our primary focus is on promoting shishalh culture and language, however, we recognize that culture is taught in many ways and has many different faces. We respect the various backgrounds which influence us at our Centre and combine individual cultural perspectives to form our unique classroom communities.

We truly believe that it takes a community to raise a child. Through the collaboration of staff and families, we are committed to a more traditional interdependent lifestyle. It’s the journey we take together in life and not our individual destinations that strengthens our children and our community. Through teamwork, we strive to co-create harmonious working environments and interactive, inspiring curriculum.

Creativity is our life’s playground. Children are born with an innate intelligence and thirst for knowledge that fuels their curiosity and wonder. We guide our students as they access and build upon this knowledge. We encourage all our students to express their original personalities through indoor and outdoor discovery.

Our shishalh teachings remind us to connect with nature. Therefore, we are committed to spending most of each day exploring the outdoors. The time we spend together in nature inspires curiosity and instills mindfulness and respect in our children as they grow physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

Our Programs

Infant and Toddler

At mem7iman, our mena program is a full-day child development program for children aged 6 months – 36 months (about 3 years).

The program can be divided into two classrooms. Their shishalh names are the skwasam (Flower) Classroom and the stutestus (Baby Hummingbird) Classroom.

Our staff are a diverse team of Infant-Toddler Educators, Early Childhood Educators, Early Childhood Educator Assistants and support workers who collaborate to create a caring and inspiring environment that is ever changing to best address the needs of the children.

Our program has been uniquely designed to the traditional shishalh teachings with a holistic and community-based approach. Through children’s exploration and discovery within a supportive and enriching environment, we develop a curriculum that follows the interests of our students

Group Care

Our school is built for three group care programs with shishalh names. They are texemay (Red Cedar), xixit’say (Red Alder), and tixway (Yellow Cedar). Each class is capable of providing care to children between 3-5 years of age.

Our dynamic team of Early Childhood Educators, Early Childhood Educator Assistants, and support workers collaborate with children to create unique and ever-changing classroom environments and curriculum.

Our program, which focuses on outdoor exploration and creative expression, strives to promote the physical, developmental, emotional, social, cultural, and spiritual well-being of our students.
